well they all pretty much say the same thing :P

Well, it has been looking good so far. What I know is that ppl want more players. I know for the xbox360 it’ll probably not ganna happen, but for the PS3 and PC we need more players. We want diversity in the games, from vehicles to weapons and to classes. I was wondering if all the maps in 1943 are island maps? Maybe having a map thats like Road To Jalalabad, this map is good both for infantry and vehicles. Its fun because you can get in a dumbagee(U.S. little car) and just run ppl over and have your squad spawn on you while your driving shooting ppl and repairing the vehicle. Also theres a lot of c4 suicide bombing and ofcourse you your good you don’t die. I think this will bring a more broad range of players that are not familiar with the Battlefield franchise because its fun. Diversity and making the game fun will always make ppl want to play. Since 1943 is not really a hardcore game bu is still really good, bringing the fun is a major factor.

    • Gustav says:

X360 can handle more players than PS3 so that wont happen =)

And about the maps, this is an island map game yes, we are not planning to release more maps right now.
And Jalabad is a BF2 map, and dunebuggies didnt exist in 1943 =)

You all have to remember that this is NOT a full price $60 dollar game, it’s a cheap DLC game on xbox arcade and PS3 store.
But when saying this, it’s still something for the hard core audience, if hard core means that you want to re-live the feeling of BF1942 in a smaller dose!

SNIPERS GOING SOLO DOING NOTHING???? NO MORE- C.O.T. SYSTEM!!!
    (Circule Of Trust)
how many times in battlefield 2 and bc snipers hiting only for theyr rank up, thinking selfis and dont care about suporting the squad???
billions of times breaking our nervous system in to a spagetti looking thing
    NO MORE. this is how….
1 option: when the squad leader give the commad from the commo rose
“attack here” , only in the snipers eyes a big yellow circle will be on the ground indicating the limits of his sniping area.
in this circule he can hit anything that moves
evry time he will try to shoot outside the indicated circule, instaead of a “BAM” from his barret an inervoice (concioucnes)will say
“what am i doing? I got to support my team”
    brainwashing the player :)
the sniper can also propose a new sniping area circule to the squad leader saying ” i have a new target sir” or somethig like that.
the size of the circule can be adjusted by the squad leader (biger smaler)
if the squad leader will see that the player can be trusted he can turn this mode (C.O.T.) off leting the sniper free to aim what ever he whants

2 the sniping area will be indicated by the squad leader after he chooses the attack position (2 orders instead of 1)

also there sould never be players out side a squad playing solo
    this game is like football
    team play is evrething
and if some players dint have qonsusnes you have to give it to them techniquly
Gustav did you like this ideas??
the problem with solo snipers must be solved.
    Dont you think?
    it destroys the game
    ps
    put bfbc2 gameplay

    • Gustav says:

I understand your thought about the sniper covering “his squad”, we are not going that far as limiting the players firing range but we do give out extra “squad points” if you as a sniper decide to focus your fire to protect your own squad under attack.

  4. suddenn says:

Im just wondering about Clans and if theres gonna be clan system similar to B2:MC. Oh and can you prone in this game?

  5. Giorgos78 says:

I have seen a lot of solo sniper attitude and i think they are not interested in squad points>
they care only about kills and the exitment of aiming throug the scope!
So it would be better to give them what they wont in order to obay, since we cant limit the firing range
So in game after they complete a number of squad points
they could use a second sniper rifle untill the match will finish.
This rifle will always be carred from the sniper in his back so the player always remeber what cind of ultimalte sniper weapon he will unlock in the match if he will be a “good boy”

Barrett XM500 long range sniper / anti-material rifle

the squad point system has failed

  6. SjitHue says:

So far it looks good, but every magasin/website seems to write almost exactly the same.
I guess most of us want to test this for our selves to find out about handling and balance.

The battlefield-series has had a history of a bit imbalanced air-units. In 42 the pilots where 50% or more of the team in maps with planes. In BF-v, BF-2 the helis has been the overall best. 2142 might have been the game where the air and armor where the most balanced. It is going to be fun finding out how 1943 is.

    • Gustav says:

Yeah the balance in 1942 wasent the best air vs ground, I remember since I played in the top 5 clans under that time. I dont think DICE had any skilled pilot at that time and we developers have a way of playing the game as we design them, you guys dont!

Thats why we have more new people, like me actually, working at DICE with real Battlefield-experience to get more balance in the game, something I thought about when I tweaked the AA’s against airplanes. They should be a real threat to pilots, not some nice black poffs in the air =)

      • Leki says:

well its good that your trying to make sure the air power is balanced (unlike most BF games at release heh). however since planes have unlimited quick reloading bombs, whats to stop pilots staying really high up out of AA range dropping there unlimited bombs onto flags constantly? expert pilots know exactly where all AA is or where to bomb the carrier to hit the planes without having to even see the target (just use the minimap) so could just do loops high up spamming bombs down. At least in other BF games like BF2 you would have to fly back to base and reload from your runway which made them vulnerable and also give the enemy a chance to get out of a last flag etc.

        • Gustav says:

they are not reloadin every second. Takes a few seconds and the bombs cant be dropped to high to get a hit on the ground.

          • Leki says:

yup i saw in one of the vids the reload time was about 8 seconds. but if bombs that are dropped from too high disapear or something after a certain range then that would solve the problem :)

  7. Evil_Paladin says:

Here is what I think of all the previews I have seen on Battlefield 1943. First, I am a console gamer. I was introduced to battlefield with modern combat for the PS2. I then moved on to Bad Company for the xbox 360. It was only, And I mean literally a day or so ago I finally played 1942. Great Game! Anyway though, coming from a console player, 1943 from what I read and what footage I have saw has left me utterly speechless…..in a good way.

I was not sure at first about unlimited ammo and regenerating health. The game looked great when I saw footage of it, but those 2 things kept bugging me. But after reading more into it, I accept it and welcome it. I think this is beyond a arcade game and is truly a battlefield expierence! It looks it, from what people say it plays it and the price will settle well with a lot of people. Im sorry, but I have a lot to say. I always wanted a good, intense battlefield expierence. Bad Company gave that to me, even though it was 24 players. I read that in 1943 however there is squads, you can spawn on any squad member or choose to chat to the whole team without being in a squad……All I got to say is THANK YOU!

Bad Company was great but you fixed the biggest flaw in 1943 right there from bad company! Option to have squads or chat to the whole team. I was hoping it would be more then 24 players as well, 1943 that is. But After reading what people have said in the previews, how intense it is with 24 players and how you can join in on instant action…..I no longer worry. I thought also by combing kits together (infantry with a bazooka and wrench) was a great step for this! I love sub machine guns and I love bazookas so it works out prefectly. I saw the new look of 1943, it looks more grity as well. Im really digging it!

I am looking forward to this more then any other game this summer, Im not hyped about modern warfare 2 either! Im more hyped for 1943! I have actually been collecting info, videos and interviews to read to hold me over until I hear something new. I check the twitter of 1943 and here daily for news. I guess for me, 1943 is doing all the right things! They decided to focus on action which is why no medics or ammo bags. Hell, we have planes now! I dont know about you guys but planes is a big freaking deal to a console player.

Not 1 plane though, but I read several will be handy per map! It was as if my mind was being read while developing this game. I honestly cannot say enough good about it! I mean, I wanted to play a WWII battlefield game so long on my 360 that it was killing me. Then one day I hear the announcement and watch the debut video. If I have a question it would be, When can we see more professional made videos of 1943?

Another thing I notice 1943 has is 3 maps, but I have a feeling me and my friends will continue play wake over and over. iwo jima as well! I mostly play games for fun, but with this I will play for fun and competitvely! I really want to get good at 1943. Also, with all the previews I read and saw, I believe this game is going to be a hit! I certainly do not take this game for granted, if anything I am proud of it. Having the devs communicate with the fans really make this game personal for me.

Like I said before I have a lot to say. To conclude, I know very few people and some PC guys hate on this, but the previews from those who played paint a different tale. Everyone seems to enjoy it and I cannot wait to enjoy it either, as a fan, as a gamer and as a competetive player. As well as fun player. Im done now………….Things just got serious!

    • Gustav says:

Thx for the positive feedback =)

I think that those PC gamers u are talking about will change their mind when they get their hands on it!

About the movies, I dont know when we are releasing more footage. Right now it’s about wrapping the game up, hitting alpha and getting ESRB ratings etc!

  8. Leki says:

well i’ve watched every video and read most of the previews and i think most of my previous issues with this game are still the same. I’m sure it will be fun for a bit and i will probably enjoy playing it, but i just dont think i will enjoy it as much as the previous battlefield games like BF1942, BFV and BF2 and i doubt it will remain fun for anywhere near as long. The main reason for this is the game mechanics have been simplified too much which may make it much easier to get into for new players but in the end it removes the depth and lastability of the game.

    The main things i dislike:

Only 3 classes. This really makes the game less diverse and people will become bored much quicker. Great classes like the medic have been removed cutting off whole great teamplay and battlefield moments. For example some of the best moments i’ve had on battlefield games are times when wounded teammates are requesting a medic after a firefight, you give them a “roger that” to show you coming to help and then make your way to each other dodging incomming fire and heal them up, then getting a “thanks” afterwards and continuing the fight. Things like that are what make a battlefield game great.

Auto health regeneration. Like the reason above but also it takes away the tension and teamwork of a fight having your health regenerate instead of being wounded and knowing your at more of a risk. Its much more fun having medics to heal you, picking up a medic kit to heal yourself or at least having a medical cabinet like in BF1942/BFV.

Unlimited ammo/nades/rockets etc. I’ve read 100’s of comments from people hating this and i have to agree. This is dumbing the game down way too much even for the casual gamer. With no support class to resupply you why not at least have limited ammo but with ammo supply boxes around the map like in BF1942? Having unlimited ammo is just going to make no one care about aiming as much, allowing you to just camp and constantly spay at enemy with no need to be conservative about your shots or fear of being in a low ammo situation and having to move out to resupply/take an enemys kit.

    • Gustav says:

I can only say that this is not a “full price” title as BF2. It’s a game we are selling in the same store where “castle crashers” are =)

  9. Leki says:

If you can answer any of these questions it would be great:

    Will it get punkbuster support?

what about battlefield recorder support for leagues, catching cheaters and making machinima?

will there be a beta or even a closed beta? I know i would be happy to test for bugs/balance and give feedback if it will make a difference.

Flag warning. This is when the flag icon flashes to show enemy is trying to take it. This feature was hated by most people in BFV and most servers disabled it. Its not good for gameplay as it removes the option of the sneaky player to try and take a flag, all that happends is it reduces the willingness of people to try and cap a flag (just spawn rape them instead) as when they go into flag radius (which has now been greatly reduced in size making it more harder to take flags) the whole enemy team is alerted by the flashing flag icon and they can just throw nades at the flag and rush in to take you out. Also smart pilots will be able to see easily and dive in and spam bombs at the flag since they have unlimited bombs and there will be no where for a solider to hide and survive as all buildings are destructible. Is this annoying feature is going to stay? at least make it optional by the server admin.

Match making. Its fine on the consoles but dont force this onto PC users. We need a server browser. I would be happy with both as that pleases everyone. will there be a server browser?

  10. M0t0rBreath says:

Hey Gustav, i was thinking of this for 1943. You know instead of using a dumbagee which never existed at that time, but I was watching Saving Private Ryan and thought this vehicle would work great: http://tinyurl.com/c4kdbl, theres somes pics if you scroll down. This vehicles seems fun and fast to get around places.

  11. Gustav, First thanks for taking the time to have this blog in general and specifically for your willingness to interact with the BF1943 community.

Overall, I have been very excited by all of the videos and hands on preview articles from GDC. There was a lot of good information given out to the press to assimilate to us. I recognize that BF:1943 basically started as a pet project of sorts and has blossomed into this cool XBL Arcade title so it has not had a typical development cycle and is a little stripped down features wise. Which is perfectly fine with me, I’m just happy to have a new BF game to enjoy this summer!

One topic that Patrick touched on and I believe Gordon did also was the improvements made around the squads in BF:1943. I know few specifics have been given out yet and Sebastian (Sibben) has been gracious enough to clarify a few things on the EA forums (http://forum.ea.com/eaforum/posts/list/0/221606.page#2140383). I’m still a bit confused overall on how exactly the team and squad chats will work. For say a matchmaking game over XBL when you are rolling with 3 other friends being in a squad and chatting amongst yourselves makes perfect sense. Where I become perplexed is when you switch over to a private match and you are playing with either 12 or 24 friends and you would want to be able to communicate freely with all 12 people on your team, but at the same time have the ability to spawn on squad mates not just control points. At least that’s my interpretation based on Sebastian’s response. Hopefully you guys can further address specifically how the squad system is going to work sometime in the future. :)

Lastly, I was ecstatic to see that you had included the ability to host Private matches!! Although I don’t come from a competitive BF clan background I do belong to a large older gamers website (2Old2Play) that really didn’t get behind BF:BC, solely because we couldn’t play together as a large group (4 people per squad limit). I know with BF:1943′s ability to host Private Matches it will definitely draw more people in and once they get the opportunity to experience the Frostbite engine, I don’t know how they will go back to FPS’s without destructible environments. I know I couldn’t! ;)

  12. Evil_Paladin says:

Gustav, I have a question. I know when 1943 was announced, the debut trailer was done exceptionally well! I say it manage to sell the game to many people. But I was wondering, when can we see another pro made video on 1943 and how has the new color schenme worked out for wake island (which in the debut trailer was very bright)? Will wake still be bright or just toned down?

    • Gustav says:

As I meantion above, I cant say when we are releasing more official footage. But I do hope we can wrap something up soon, your best chance is to ask Gordon to fix something for you, he’s the guy fixing all that stuff! =)

  13. unit_one says:

Gustav Halling! I can help you desighn weapon damage statistics for Bad Company 2. Ive done a lot of research to compile a special chart just for that. you can check it here, at Bad Company 2 forum, here’s the link.
(It does not have damage-to-distance calculations right now)
    http://forum.ea.com/eaforum/posts/list/219956.page

I don’t want any payement for that, just want this game to have a war atmosphere, where people use team tactics, like covering fire, or staying together. I am playing Killzone 2 online, it is a good game with powerfull guns, and even without a microphone people stay together, becawse they afraid to go alone and die. But Killzone 2 can not provide enough freedom, weapon collection and vehicles, but Battlefield games can!
    Please answer!

    • Gustav says:

Hi, thx for you offering but I we dont hire 3rd party people, but if you feel this is your thing tell our HR people!

Set togheter a nice CV with your work and thoughts about our games and future!

(I just finished adding corresponding rate of fire to the weapons)

  14. Giorgos78 says:

    smoother contol sesityvity and movement!!!!
many in game players have complained and compaired the aiming stick with COD4 exelent aiming movment.
will there be given enfasis in the aiming movments of the stick in the ne w battlefield games
or you think you found the perfect formula for aiming???
you know many parents think theyr child is the most beutiful.
do you have this syndrome with your games?
do you thik you have better aiming movment than COD4
    (hard question i know)
but if we all want to make this game better we have to be true and realists

  15. Gustav says:

    Note:
I am reading through all comments this evning or tomorrow morning, have a lot of work right now but I will read it all =)

  16. playalain says:

I just thought about a nice feature, which would give BF1943 a special touch. From the time of Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142, players used the “Battlerecorder” feature to make some of the best movies in gaming-history. It’s much easier to make movies with such a feature to replay the matches. Why don’t you include such a thing in BF1943 or probably later in BFBC2? May you plan to do something, but this would be one of my greatest whiches for your coming games :) (Of course I meant that function to be included for the PC version)

    • Gustav says:

I would gladly see a battlerecorder in the game but since BF1943 is a small price product we need to focuse on the gameplay and make it the best it can be.

To develop tools must be left for the bigger products =)

      • M0t0rBreath says:

Can’t you have the BattleRecorder as a DLC. Once the game is done, you can work on this and have it be a DLC in just a couple of months or weeks, however long it takes.

      • Leki says:

please work on a decent demo recorder for the frostbyte engine, look at call of duty world at war. its /record didnt work until patch 1.3 which annoyed many fans of the game and made it much harder to get cheaters banned on the punkbuster master ban list as a recorded demo is needed for proof. Also most of the major leagues require demos for competitive matches and so the competitive side of call of duty world at war was pretty much dead before it even started.

I’m sure at least for PC you will want clans to have servers up for BF1943 and BF:BC2….but without recording support there will be few leagues for clans to play in and so will be few clans willing to run servers. Dont make the same mistake treyarch did and get record support in this game from the start.

  17. M0t0rBreath says:

Hey Gustav, we know you are busy, so thanks for answering our questions. I was wondering what is the point system going to be like. Will it be like BF2, where a kill was 2pts, kill assist 1pt, etc? Or will it be a kill 10pts, etc?I’d rather have the 2pts per kill, having too many points for a kill is just plain weird because your going to have 600 pt rounds and thats what I hated about Cod4. Just make a plain a simple, nothing complicated. Plz!

    • Gustav says:

We are using a system more towards the +10 points for a kill, +10 for vehicles etc and bonuses for working togheter in a squad for example!

The only “big” +600 points we give out is for our Postcards in our award system. Example playing 100 matches etc but those points are more for your career and not for you ingame scoreboard!

  18. M0t0rBreath says:

Do you know anything special that 1943 will contain, maybe different from the other BF games?

    • Gustav says:

The most unique feature BF1943 have is the new bombingraids where you control 3 bombers that can be shot down!

  19. unit_one says:

    Thank You for replying Gustav.
I don’t quite understand to whom am I suppose to talk to? Who are HR people, and how do I contact them? Sorry, I’m confused…
I will do my best to help you develop this fine gaming product!
(I just finished adding corresponding rate of fire to the weapons)

  20. Hummel-o-War says:

Will BF1943 offer server-lists/search (like BF1942 up to BF2142 had), so one can – for example – manually search for low-ping server? Maybe for PC-Version of BF1943?

With BFBC1 there hasn’t been such an option – what caused a lot of hassle, because of a lot of german players seem to be switched to uk or french servers via the matchmaking system. One may guess, that this caused a lot of “lagging”…and frustration…

    • Gustav says:

Not on the console version atleast but we are looking into similar solutions on the PC version!

But I dont think the lag that could happen in BC1 was because of server location, since they are pretty much on the same lines in europe but of other issuses that have been looked into. The game runs much smoother today than at release.

  21. Gustav, in a Private Match pre & post game lobby will both teams (all 24 players) be able to chat/hear one another? Also, the ability to do a brief broadcast (5-10 sec) all team voice message utilizing either L or R on the D-pad to initiate it would would be an awesome feature to have. How difficult of a feature would something like that be to make?

    • Gustav says:

I must say that even if this is possible it’s not entirly up to us.
sony/microsoft have some limitions in their rules about these VOIP solutions but we will see what we can do!

      • Thanks for responding! I do hope you guys are able to implement something that enables full server chat in privates matches, because the gaming community I belong to really enjoy rehashing some of our “better” moments and socializing post game. We enjoy playing the game, but the social aspect afterward is just as important of a component of the full gaming experience. :)

  22. Al3x says:

I read that the player number for PC version is not set to stone yet and what does it mean for us PC users when we hear that the PC version will not be a console port?

Can you be more specific on these two things?
    Thank you!

    • Gustav says:

It means what we have said, that we dont know the exact player number on the PC but dont expect a 100vs100 war going on just because it’s on the PC =)

And the other thing is that many are afraid of a bad “console” port that usually means that the developer done nothing more than adding an functional keyboard and mouse solution.
There are many big games out there doing this misstake, but I wont name their names but I think most people have played something and after 1 minute thought:
“This is clearly a console game, just running on a PC instead”.

We are not doing it that way since we are PC gamers ourself also!
We are developing the game as a side-SKU to the console game which means it will feel like a PC game.

      • Al3x says:

Thanks Gustav, maybe this makes some worried guys out there feel better.
And I am fine with 12vs12, I even prefer the good old 8vs8 because BF43 will be a HELL OF A FUN game for my team while we are waiting for something much bigger. :-)

        • Al3x says:

          I have to add something.
I was one of the first testers of a console shooter that also came out on PC last year and they made all mistakes you can imagine.
I was very dissapointed because my team had to deal with this for over 1 year (in absence of a BF2 follow up).

Actually I can’t even tell you all flaws and mistakes, it would be to much for your Blog here…
I am a hardcore PC gamer but also own a PS3 which I don’t use for gaming, so you know where this questions came from.

But I tell you what: I know where YOU guys come from and I am very confident in your work.
I am sure BF43 will be loads of fun for us and I hardly can wait for it – I think those 3 maps will be enough considering the fact that 75% of all BF2 players were spending their time just on Strike at Karkand… :-) )

  23. Evil_Paladin says:

Gustav, Can the fans of 1943 like myself and others on here expect to get a taste of 1943 early before it releases? If not, its okay but man I am waiting for this game more then modern warefare 2 and I love the COD series!

    • Gustav says:

I dont think there will be anything released before the release date. But since we are selling this on PSN and x360 marketplace there will be a trial version!

      • Evil_Paladin says:

Awesome! Even though I will not download the trial version, Im buying this on day 1 without playing the trial version. I know this will be good and I am confident it will be a great battlefield game. On the other hand, my friends Matt and Ken can download the trial and then buy it. They never really played battlefield. I figured this one would be more their style :)

(about weapon damage chart for BC2)
Hello, Gustav halling. I sent three e-mails on three different e-mail adresses, but I do not receive any responce on my question. One reply says that they have too many e-mails, and I need to try another one. I tried to contact HR people, like You said, but I did not receive any info either. Does it meen, that my idea is no good? Well, at least say so….or maybe I’m doing something wrong.

  25. David says:

    Hello Gustav,

i played a lot of Bf 1942 during my old clan times, now i work as Software developer, I really liked it and i was one of the first who designed new maps, for our BF 1942 Community, like battle of Cherbourg. We also did a lot of customizing regarding training maps. Perhaps you can easy programm a gaming interface in that users can do customizing like Granades On/ OF or Tanks/ Planes On/ Off. And perhaps it is possible to customize the time(day Night) / fog(onOf / 30, 50%) / Weather(rainy), that can be funny :) . Or customizing with the realism, so we are able to to Balancing on our own, one hit death ( Modifing hitboxes / hits, so mods can be made easily

One wish i have can you do something against pixel shooting( Clouds for example have in older battelefields always the same position and people find out how to do pixel shooting( perhaps there can be more realism ) with the weather, wind for e.g.

We do have some moving clouds in the horizion in BF1943, but skilled ones will learn how to aim anyhow, and they should.
But I dont think they will be using our clouds at least =)

      • David says:

Yes but, for example in BF 1942, i did pixel shooting, by taking the shapes of the clouds on a foil. On Iwo Jima, i spwan in a destroyer and the shape of the Defguns, in combinaition with the shape of the clouds , was the best pixel shooting shape for bombing the airfield.
