Good morning, I’m now back in the office here at DICE and we have a sunny day outside the office!
My producer Patrick Liu have also been busy and have gone more into some parts of the game on his blog that I want to communicate to all English speaking fans!
I will go into more into our Replenish ammunition system and how our three classes works in the game!
Replenish ammunition
Many people have been wondering how our “unlimited ammunition” works. Unlimited ammunition is really an unfortunate word, replenish explains much better what we want to do!
Imagine yourself running around trying to find a crate to fill up your ammo, but instead the crate comes to you!
Bundles
The AT rifle and Rifle grenades have about 2-3 shots in each “bundle”. You can fire one rocket, reload and then fire another rocket pretty fast. But when your “bundle” is emptied a timer starts ticking, this is the replenish time. The time is being carefully monitored and tweaked under our playtests!
Imagine yourself that under this time you would otherwise be forced to run 100m to the nearest ammunition crate, and then run 100m back again to be able to fire your next round. Running back and forward like that is no fun!
With replenish you wont get any grenade or AT spam. And even if the snipers have “unlimited” ammunition they have been proven to be found pretty fast under our playtests so there is no exploit there either!
The system have been proven to work great under our playtests and we have people from hardcore ace pilots to dedicated snipers. So once again you will have to trust us with this one. We wanted to test something new and it’s the same principal with the regenerating health-system we have. Which have been proven to work great in other games also.
All the changes we have made is to remove all the obstacles that would have stopped you from firing at your enemy!
Classes
As you have seen we have “only” three classes. We choose this because we wanted to make three very distinct classes, and it’s also a lot easier to balance three classes than for example seven classes. Many of course misses the “medic” class but with regenerating health we couldn’t find any good area for this class and the regenerating health, in this game, overrules the medic class in this case.
Infantry and Rifleman have grenades, Scout have expack. All classes have some kind of melee weapon. Infantry have a wrench, Rifleman a bayonet and the Japanese Scout have a katana sword!
Infantry: Close combat soldier, your run-and-gun type. Suites beginners very well that want to spray with the Thompson SMG. But he is also the only support-class with his repairing wrench and the most effective anti-vehicle soldier with his AT rifle!
Rifleman: Best in the middle range distance. Have a semi-auto (M1 Garand) and iron sight. The class for the more skilled player that wants to have the best control of his shots. Also have Rifle grenades against soldiers and any walls that may be in the way!
Scout: The sniper class. For all the lone wolves 
Equipped with a pistol for those close combat situations and expacks to blow up.. yeah, anything!
Theoretically all classes can take out a tank sooner or later but I wouldn’t go against a tank as Rifleman, but with expacks you also need to get pretty close to do any damage…
There have been comments about PC vs. X360, PS3. But I can only say that I cant comment on any of those things at the time being.
I can only explain and comment on the game design and gameplay experience in Battlefield 1943.
Gustav I have a few questions regarding Battlefield Bad Company 2 particularly the problems I found or didn’t enjoy in Battlefield Bad Company.
1. A Lobby system, Why adandon it ? Room Pings are very useful to avoid lag and a Lobby system also helps me / us play the Map we want with the most players. I’ve often chosen a Map on BFBC to be put into a completely different Map
2. Why ruin the BF experience by limiting comms ? BF2MC ( PS2 ) is the best Online game I ever played and Full team comms played a part in that, telling jokes with the regulars and strategise to win the game was all part of the BF experience that was sadly lost in BFBC making it a less enjoyable game.
3. Team Select ? how annoying is it to join a friend and be on the opposing team when there is room on theirs ? Very is the answer.
4. 4 player Party’s ? I HAD 30 odd friends who played BFBC picking just 4 was impossible. I said HAD because the 30 friends who owned BFBC is now 3 because the rest all sold it because BFBC is so far from BF2MC it’s unreal
5. Parachutes ? Why abandon them ? I DON’T LIKE STAIRS and dying from a 1 storey house is annoying and avoidable
6. Prone ? What was wrong with Prone it had to be gotten rid of ?
7. Clan Support ? Clans who loved this aspect of BF2MC are not happy
8. Vote to Kick ? There are still Team Killers but now no way of getting rid of them unless they Max out their Team Kills
9. Less like BF2MC More like Call of Duty ? BF2MC was known and loved for It’s Vehicles Why get rid of most of them in Conquest ? If I wanted Call of Duty I would play Call of Duty.
10. and last be not least GOLD RUSH Who thought this was a good idea ? I’d love to see your Server Ratio’s when you released your ” Extra Bonus Conquest Maps ” ( which should of been the main Online mode in the 1st place ). Battlefield is Conquest and always was because both teams are attacking and that’s what’s fun about it. GOLD RUSH really really blows
I look forward to your answers and hope Battlefield Bad Company 2 is more like Battlefield 2 : Modern Combat and less like Battlefield Bad Company or I’m washing my hands of Battlefield, DICE and any future DICE developed games.

Can you go prone in BF1943 or just crouch?
Does the health replenish to 100% or does it top out less and less depending on how many times your injured, does it take more time to replenish your health depending on how many times you’ve needed to heal yourself, do you have to stop and activate a health kit or is it completely automatic?
until BF1943 becomes more like the “real” Battlefield, and not this Heroes lookalike crap I’ll be waiting for BF3. *sniff*

I’m writing this as a very concerned Battlefield franchise fan. When DICE created Battlefield 1942 they became legend among PC gamers. With one release FPS gaming expectations were changed forever. 64 players, huge maps, mixed vehicular and infantry combat. I was a ‘pro-am’ level player in FPSes stretching back to the original D00M, and Battlefield ruined me for corridor combat. Even the latest and greatest standard FPSes feel like claustrophobic mini-games compared to the BF experience. Now I’m reading reports that the >PC< version of BF43 will be nothing more than a console port? 24 player MAX? ‘Reduced’ map size to make 24 players seem less like a joke? I understand the limitations of consoles. That is why I don’t do a lot of console gaming. I have a PS3 and I wouldn’t dream of running an FPS on the thing. I understand that the consoles are an attractive market for developers but Battlefield just isn’t suited for them. To ‘port’ a casual console hackjob of Battlefield to the PC is maddening. PC gamers are out there. BF2 still sees high populations on servers day after day. We spend thousands of dollars on game-worthy hardware and all we ask is that you produce a game that utilizes it. Give us 64 players. Give us teamplay. Give us content. We’re begging, really. I challenge to look at any forum where BF43 is being commented on and that is all you will see. You are risking losing your core PC market. Believe me, I am about as far from a hater or troll as they come. I understand buggy products. I understand having to cut back on originally hyped features. So long as you are ambitious and -try- to give us the epic , cinematic experiences that Battlefield is known for. 24 Players, endless ammunition, regenerating health, 3 classes, and 3 maps is the antithesis of ‘epic’. 24 players is hardly worthy of the ‘Battlefield’ moniker. How can you offer less than the original BF1942 in every way except for graphically and not see that as a mistake? Battlefield fans are fans because previous titles have offered an experience that no other franchise has. Even the latest clones haven’t touched that same magic. Frontlines and Quake Wars were eagerly anticipated by BF players simply as something to tide us all over until a proper BF3 announcement. They failed as BF clones. Now we get this? Please restore our faith in DICE. Show whoever it is that is making these decisions the thousands of forums filled with a collective ‘WTF?!’ Someone there has to make a difference…

I completely agree with what you just stated. I feel that every year, PC players are being forgotten more and more. It seems games are being dumbed down to console levels because its
1. easy for the developers
2. believed to be what players want
3. because its not “fun” to run out of ammo or die
I also, when introduced to Battlefield 1942 was amazed at the scale of the game and the amount of roles that players could take up. I feel that Battlefield 1942 is nothing more than a prettier, FPS, version of Battlefield Heroes. EA is going to have a hell of a time trying to market this game when there is so little content, it doesn’t apeal to the die-hard battlefield fanbase, it only supports 24 players, is limited to a Microsoft Live-like platform, and is pretty much a port of a console game. I loved it when Battlefield represented a PC originated franchise that was truly epic and was worthy of playing. This is honestly a disgrace to the BF franchise and EA should be ashamed of themselves and be thinking twice if they think this is going to be a hit and worthy of spending money on.

I won’t mind loading this game and having a blast, as I am sure I will when the game is released. This game is doing something quite interesting, and I am willing to give it a chance, as I am sure DICE will not dissapoint.

I agree with some of the other comments. As a huge Battlefield fan I too am disappointed with the lack of a distinct PC version of BF1943. I have been a loyal Battlefield fan since I first installed the Wake Island demo on my PC so many years ago, I’m pretty sure it was just after BF1942 was published. I just remember playing on a full demo server with many other players, and having one of the best gaming experiences EVER!
Now I am disheartened to find that this is yet another Battlefield game that moves further and further from the original game dynamics that made BF1942 a legendary game. BF was always a PC game first. I beg of you DICE please, please, don’t forget what made you one of best Game Studios in the industry.
Speaking as someone who is both a gamer and a game artist, I feel like I am torn on this. On the one hand I see the potential in this new version of Battlefield. Visually this could be the best yet, I’ll reserve judgment until I have played BF1943. While at the same time I see so many of the original features of Battlefield stripped away I just don’t see much of what I used to love so much, like trying to fight your way through a whole battle using just the medic class, while at the same time still ranking first on the server. But the biggest missing feature is the missing additional players. Its a crime to only have 24 players, especially for the PC gamers in the house.
C’mon DICE release a special edition pc version with enhanced features!!! Just my opinion, it’s nothing personal.

Basically I understand and I am totally with guys like Sean, saying that I am a hardcore PC gamer as well and mainly into eSports.
I personally think that BF43 will be something like a bone for the dogs, the non BF players that would be.
Our team’s main focus is on Bad Company 2 and we will use BF43 as that what it will be: a sidedish that makes us even more hungry for the real dish, BF:BC 2.
I don’t need a BF3 if Bad Company 2 will give us what we all have been waiting for more than 3 years..

have nerfed the Battlefield franchise.
It used to be about teamwork, medics would heal, support guys would give ammo etc., now it’s just BF heroes with better visuals.

Sir, have you ever PLAYED battlefield? You call needing ammo or having to obtain it no fun? How about teamwork!? How about the incredible glory of capturing a base with your sidearm, even when all your primary weapons are out of ammo – the sheet delight of taking a victim’s kit and using it against his own team. You’ve taken all of this away from the players.
So now this scenario can never happen:
“I’m out of rockets – cover me while I make a run for the crate!” “GO GO GO!”

The joy of gunning down enemies, and then needing to sneak into the enemy base to get more ammo was some of the best part of BF1942.
What fun would it be to try to defend the airfield on Wake Island from a tank if you get grenades by skulking around until they replenish.
But with 3 classes, and two of them rather proficient in taking out vehicles, that part of the fun is rather moot.
This will be a great game for console owners who has no idea on what they are missing out on, but for those of us who have been active players since the demo, and still long for a fierce and frantic fight on Midway, Wake etc. in true BF42 spirit (with trajectories!) this will be a dissappointment..

- “Enemy spotting system”? Yes and when how?
- Movement explanation if possible (pronespamming, diving, jump and shoot at once?)
- do planes also reammo whilst flying or do they have to overfly the carrier?
- so I guess tanks can also shoot infinite ammo as well.
Do we need to repair vehicles then or will they also autorepair?
As for BF43 i understand that you made up your mind about the health and ammo system, though I believe the current one is not really good for teamplay, exploits will be found the one or the other way, believe me.
As for BF43 I try to overlook all the flaws because you try get more new players into Battlefield, but don’t make the mistake and keep this low skill level based gameplay in Bad Company 2.
I have to agree with ESMROO. It seems as if you’ve never played BF2 other than to evaluate the game itself, not the gameplay. What you are creating here is a game full of cowards. Hiders that do NOTHING for exciting gameplay. “If I just wait here long enough and hide like a little girl, I”ll get more ammo.” Pityful, just pityful. As someone who has played BF2 for 3 /12 years and countless hours, I feel you are completely Missing the mark on this one. I know, how about you get a clue by talking this out with real BF2 players before running down the road creating a childs game, instead of a battle scenario.

wow. way to ruin the greatest FPS franchise ever… I started playing BF42 on the wake isle demo and was hooked. It incorporated everything I had been hoping for even though the vehicles were arcadish.
Now you ruin it by taking away the classes, removing most vehicles, allowing heal over time and ammo replenishment… WTF I will not buy this game nor will anyone in my clan. Consoles will be dead in some years (statement by Microsoft), PC is the only platform that will survive.Why? Because in future households there will be a server in every basement and a workstation in every room, simply no need for a console anymore.

It is truly sad to see the Battlefield series’ last chance for redemption after the worthless 2142 be so crappy.
One can only hope that someone out there has the intelligence to recognize what made 1942/BF2 so great and loved. Maybe they can revive the spirit of this once glorious series.
All I’m hearing here is this: we’re conforming the Battlefield series to the current trends in video games because we care more about making money than making a good game.
Just because mechanics work well in other games doesn’t mean they will work well in yours. Obviously it’s not fun running around low on health or ammunition, but that’s why BF2 has squads! That’s why you’re supposed to hang around a support class if you’re too trigger happy. That’s why one of your squad mates should be a medic.
All of the features you’re removing boil down to removing teamwork from the game. If someone used to playing Halo 3 or Gears of War isn’t enjoying Battlefield, I wouldn’t be surprised. They’re completely different types of FPS games. Why are you trying to turn BF into something that it’s not?
The Battlefield series will be dead to me if this game comes out without some serious changes. Mainly the ones mentioned over and over above.
What battlefield should be is what ARMA II and Operation Flashpoint 2 will be but I think EA and DICE know that there is no way that they can compete with these games.
I see all Battlefield fans and players abandoning the BF FAIL games and moving to Operation flashpoint, which looks AWESOME!

There is no reason to make a “just like any other” like ARMA and OF2 are doing.
And these games are more military simulations, if you played the first ones and the new ones seem even more sim. And that is not what the battlefield experience is about =)
It will be fun watching everyone eat theirs words when we give you some hands-on with this game
I really am in two minds about this.
On the one hand we have stripped out classes, CoD style health, free ammo and no unlocks.
On the other hand DESTRUCTIBLE SCENERY!

PS – I’m enjoying the BF:H beta too
First off from what I’VE seen it looks good. Not Great but good. There are some constructive critisims that I would like to give. First We would like at least a medic class. The unlimited life is just way over done with other FPS games. Medic adds the level of team work that make a “Battlefield moment”. Second, ammo crates are better. This unlimited ammo will encourage spray and pray tactics. Third and final, make more maps available even if it is a month after launch. Console gamers could really use the other maps in 1942. Remember that this is new to consoles. Alot of players here are not familier with 1942. We need more variety then three maps. That is a DLC to Bad Company, not a full game. They will need justifucation to spend $15-$20 US dollars (or what ever currency you use). Five sounds like a better number. Remember, there is NO singleplayer to worry about nor is there AI to program.
If this works, I bet that you could do this with BF Vietnam as well. I hope it does. I have liked those on PC but I do prefer a console to a PC. (less need for upgrading)
I understand the PC players concerns however. They have been waiting for a BF3 for a very long time now. 2142 really didn’t fill that void. I would venture to say that Frontlines: Fuel of War is a better game then 2142. Thou it still isn’t BF2. If you guys give them a hybrid of Bad Company with their favorate parts of BF2, you should have a solid winner.

Fuel of War (disaster), COD4&5 (xbox pretending to be PC), ARMA(not impressive) and the worst ever BFHeros shame on you, somebody needs to be let go.(I hope that’s a test platform). I’m excited to try BF1943 out, even though you took my class away(recon). I’ve played BF1942-2142 with all expans packs.
